All about trains
Horses.
A long time ago many types of goods cars were pulled by horses. It did not pull passengers but it was pulling mine cars filled with coal from the coal mines to other places. It only pulled goods. There were some problems as the horse had to sleep at night so it cannot go continuously or overnight. It was mostly used just for transporting goods like coal.
Steam engines
Steam engines were also helpful. It was invented by James watt. It used coal and water for steam. This made the pistons move in a full circle. The first steam engine in India was Mumbai to thane in 1853. it covered a distance of 34 kilometers. Steam engines were hard to maintain. You had to keep filling coal continuously.
Diesel engines
Diesel engines were run by diesel. They did not need continuous filling. They could cover long distances and pull heavy loads. But they caused a lot of pollution as the smoke produced by burning diesel goes into the atmosphere.
Electric trains
Electric trains use electricity from wires hanging above the tracks. It does not need refueling as it gets electricity continuously. It also helps to save diesel and coal for future use. It reduces pollution in the air. Now many stations have electric lines. There are also many electric trains in operation.
