THE DETROIT OF ASIA

Chennai is the auto industry hub of India. It is a highly developed metropolitan city with many breathtaking places to see. How can it also be the auto industry hub of India? First of all, Chennai has not one, not two but 3 ports across 60 kilometres. One at Chennai and the other two at Ennore and Kattupalli respectively.

This allows the auto manufacturing companies to easily export their vehicles to South East Asia. This stretch of 60 kilometres is called the Automotive hub of India. Secondly, the Tamil Nadu government provides many perks for the companies to set up their manufacturing plants. Some of the perks include tax incentives and providing large amounts of land. This is similar to Hyderabad, where the Telangana government provided large amounts of land to IT companies at dirt-cheap prices. Chennai also has the advantage of having many engineering colleges. This allows auto manufacturing companies to easily hire employees on a large scale. When seeing these many advantages, you must think that a city can't ask for more. But, there are more factors that promote Chennai as an ideal hotspot for auto manufacturing. Chennai's hot and humid climate plays a key role. The climate aids in drying the paints on vehicles much quicker. The quick drying of the paint makes its quality better and last longer. The cherry on top is Chennai's humid climate which prevents static electricity from building up as it allows the current to flow, preventing the spoilage of some of the electronic equipment in the vehicles produced. Ford was the first company to spot Chennai as an ideal hotspot for its auto manufacturing plant. Hyundai followed suit the next year and as the years progressed, many automobile companies set up their manufacturing plants in Chennai, giving jobs to hundreds and thousands of people.
